#1 Front Roll-Bar rubbers going AWOL

Post by rfs1957 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 3:52 pm

Thought this might help someone, or throw up a cause ......

Image

Suffered for many years with occasional sideways movement of one of the front roll-bar D-rubbers, going as far as falling out, both originals and polyurethanes, even with proper sizing.

Image

I folded up a pair of backing plates with a 3mm lip on each side out of 15/10 SS and slipped one behind each bush.

Image

This was the end of the problem ; but have I just masked something else ?

Rory,

I hate to break this to you but that is a factory fit item :D I'm saying that since they were on my car when I got it although painted black and since it's an November '61 car I would bet that all E-Types have them to stop the bushes coming out.

Just a minute ! What makes you think some other smart guy like me didn't make some for his/your car ? No reference on any parts book I have ever seen ........... think you're just trying to steal my thunder.

I think the part number (assuming the same for S2 cars) is C15097.

C.15097 is the U-clamp that covers the D-rubber, we're talking about the flat plate with edges that lies behind it.

Agree with Dave, standard fit on all S1 and S2 cars I've seen.

Correct of course.

Indeed the factory ones are better. The lips are deeper and keep the bush more secure - so much so that they need a curved cut-out each side for the bar itself.

How satisfying to know that I've made a part that I should have had all along.

But how come I can't see them anywhere in my 3.8 parts book - or were they retro-fitted precisely because they went AWOL ?

And should I have them on the rears, where I've never had a problem and didn't make any ?

Because they weren't fitted to the 3.8 cars and are not listed in J30. They make an appearance in the 4.2 catalogue.

I can tell you they were on mine since 1981 which is the last time it was driven on the road before I got it and they are the factory item with the cut outs.
Could have been they were retro fitted which makes sense, a friend of mine has a 3.8 and when he took it for the MOT today the bush had fallen out the anti roll bar, could be he never had them fitted.

My late 62 OTS doesn't have them. But thanks for raising this, I've now added them to the list of stuff I need.

Only 'applicable' to the later cars but can be retro-fitted.
