Rotational noise coming from inlet cam cover

#1 Rotational noise coming from inlet cam cover
Hi Everyone
I've now tightened up the timing chains and seem to have stopped the annoying rattle, but I now have a new intermittent, rotational noise coming from the inlet cam cover. It sound like something rubbing-metal to metal.
I'm going to pop the cover off again and have another look. Hopefully it'll be something obvious but if not can the engine be run with the cam cover off?
At least the electronic ignition I fitted worked first time so not all bad news.

Well, you can run it, slowly, with the cover off but it will be a VERY messy business because the cam lobes will fling oil in every direction . Can you localise the noise to the front or rear? If to the rear, I would suspect the tacho generator drive as a possibility . If you really need to run it with the cam cover off, I suggest you just put a few nuts on the studs, so that you can rest the cover on them which will at least limit the amount of oil which can be flung upwards and still give you an opportunity to put an "ear-tube" stethoscope into the gap between cover and head

That's what I suspected, considering how much oil was lying in the heads.
Something has just occurred to me-which way round should the wire gauze filter be fitted in the crankcase breather. Dome side towards the block or towards the radiator? I've fitted it facing the block-this could be the source of the noise. It sounds like the kind of noise that something rubbing against the steel mesh would make.

Alan : I don't have a definite answer to the gauze filter, but considering that the front of the engine has the domed cover I would expect that the domed part of the filter would face forwards. If you have it fitted facing backwards, I think the domed part might touch the locknut and telegraph chain noise to the cover

This seems the most likely candidate, since it's the only thing that I may have inadvertently changed. Anyway it'll have to wait until tomorrow since we're off to Glasgow today to see the Eagles. I'll make an update tomorrow.

Latest update.
The Eagles were brilliant. They played for a shade under three hours and I was heard singing out loud-doesn't bear thinking about.
I've also reversed the gauze filter, but the noise does still seem to be there, although not as often. I'm now going to invest in a stethoscope and continue my investigations.
My petrol tank sump is leaking again, but I now know where from. The sump assembly had a wax seal near the top, where the main body meets the brass section with the internal thread. This joint is the source of the leak and so I've invested in a new sump from SNG. The mystery of the wax ring has now been solved!

I've just noticed that I'd elevated you to the level of a divine entity in one of my previous posts-sorry about that. I suspect it's not the first time it has happened to you.
One of my work colleagues, Brian, is usually referred to as Brain by our Boss in most of his e-mails so you're not alone.
It's worse still if you can't even sign your own name properly -yes I've done that and so has my Boss unsurprisingly.
