#1 3.8 Indicator Assembly - Seeking Help / Photos

Post by neil4444 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:21 pm

Hi,
I'm after a little assistance if I may.
My 62 OTS lost its indicator stalk/assembly before I purchased the car.
According to SNG Barratt the original part was c16069 but this is now superseded by c21710, here:
http://www.sngbarratt.com/ProductDetail ... 78443d&l=7
Is this a reasonable & original looking replacement or should I attempt to find an original in which case did they fit the same unit to any other cars ?
I would also like to know how it attaches to the steering column. Should there be fixing on the column or should I have a 'C' shaped bracket to bolt the assembly to ?
Also should there be a housing around the indicator assembly ?
Lastly I read that some cars have a steering lock fitted but not sure if I should have this on an October 62 car ?

Many thanks for any assistance and/or photos.

Regards,

Neil

Steering lock not fitted to 62. Barratt stalk looks right. Yes to cover. 2-part initially metal then plastic. Stalk crimped in IIIRC so not impossible but pretty dodgy to R&R. I'd be tempted to get the whole switch if you're going to do decent mileage.

Thanks Pete. I'm guessing my housing was plastic as if it were metal it would probably still be hanging on there.

My late '62 3.8 (November build) has a metal housing, not plastic.

It is possible to remove the stalk for re-chroming. I think they are splined not crimped.

Hi John,

Many thanks but don't worry as have this morning managed to source the parts via Richard Smith & Hutsons.

Cheers,

Having said that I think photos would still be a useful addition to the forum as I could find little on the subject (especially the covers (metal or plastic)).

Glad you got sorted but as I've taken some pics anyway, here goes. First, a general view (and yes I know my car is very dusty, there is a reason for this and it is due a clean next week!).

Image

Then a close up of the right side;

Image

Please note that for some reason the PO enlarged the hole around the stalk- it should not be that large.

Then a close up of the left side. The left half of the cowling simply clips onto the right hand half.

Image

The next two shots are of the left half of the cowling removed showing the spring clips which hold it to,the right half.

Image

Image

Finally a shot of the left side of the column with the left half of the cowling removed.

Image

What you can see here is that there is a pair of semi-circular metal brackets which encircle the outer column housing and are bolted together with a pair of machine screws. The right hand half of the cowling attaches to the right hand bracket half with another pair of screws. In this picture, the left hand half circle is home made from a strip of aluminium as the original was missing, the right hand half ( which is largely hidden from view) is original.

On purchase my 62 OTS had all of the indicator assembly missing and I've struggled to find out what it should consist of. There appears to be little information in the service & parts manuals as to the detailed parts & how it works - it just seems to list it as a complete unit. I've therefore had to work out how it operates with the help of photos from this forum & google. I have today with a bit of trial & error made the missing 2 brackets to clamp the indicator to the steering column & to receive the indicator housing.

Image

The indicator stalk I'm using is the 85SA (part no. C21710) which Barratt's advise is the only one available now for the 3.8.

However, in putting it all together I can't help something is missing around the cancel ring area. It doesn't seem right that the metal cancel lug presses against a nylon lever to cancel as I would expect this to wear the nylon out very quickly.

Image

I've seen an additional nylon cancel ring in some set ups but do not know what this part is. Please can anyone advise if there's something missing from my set up ?

Cheers,
Neil

Neil

This thread has details of the steering column assembly which may help: viewtopic.php?p=7603&highlight=steering+column#7603

PS Any chance you could keep posted pictures to 800x600 as it makes the thread difficult to read on small screen devices?

Thanks John. Good to know it's as it should be. I tweaked the cancel lug a bit to try to get a better cancel. However in doing so I've established that the reason it's not working as it should be is that the stalk pivot point is working loose on the brand new ?160 indicator unit.

Neil -

Your parts are beautiful, but from this angle it appears that each is missing a little detail (as least when compared to mine). Near the angular and longitudinal center of the semicircular section of each clamp halve, there should be a small round emboss that engages the small bores on each side of the column housing. These embosses prevent the assembly from rotating around the column, such as in the event that you hit the indicator lever too hard. You can replicate the factory emboss by drilling halfway through the outside of the semicircular section, setting a ~.050" diameter flat punch in the counterbore, and then giving the punch a hard tap.

Take a close look at you column - once you see the little bores 180* apart, this should make a lot more sense.

Best of luck!

Thanks John, I bought myself an excellent little metal bender (?32 off ebay) & the curves were done around an appropriate sized socket in a vice.

I know the very dimples you are referring too. Thanks for pointing this out as this also answers how close to top of the tube the clamps should be located.

I've reached the wiring stage and am seeking some assistance with the indicator connections.

On the loom I have 6 wires:
- Green/Red
- Green/White
- Black/White
- Blue/Yellow (cloth)
- Purple
- Black/Red

On the indicator stalk (c21710) I have 7 wires:
- Green/Red
- Green/White
- Green/Yellow
- Blue (cloth)
- Green/Blue
- Green/Brown
- Brown

The Green/Red & Green/White seem fairly obvious, however for the rest I'm unsure (although could make 1 or 2 educated guesses).

The 3.8 wiring diagram doesn't mention the stalk wire colours. The 4.2 diagram gives some info (e.g. that Black/White connects to Green/Yellow and Black/Red connects to Green/Blue).

Does anyone please know definitely which connects to which (and which one doesn't connect to anything) ?

Regards,

Neil

This is from the 4.2 if it is any help. U/Y goes to dip switch, P to fuse:
