#1 Issue with installing 2+2 Exhaust - It's too big

Post by dfran » Fri Oct 31, 2014 5:12 pm

Hi everyone, I bought a Series 1.5 2+2 and whilst restoring it I had to replace the exhaust. After removing the old one I comparing it to the new one. The 2 new silencers are twice as long. I thought it may still fit and that the old one was actually wrong but the older silencers were 9" too smaller. I spoke with the dealer who sold it to me which is a jag specialist and they said that is the only exhaust for a my 2+2. Has anyone had this issue?

"Twice as long" and "9 inches smaller" doesn't make sense for silencers. Are you talking about resonators? Presumably not. Long wheelbase silencers (6 or 12) are longer.

IIRC the main silencer on a 2+2 is a single box into which a single front pipe goes, two pipes emerging at its rear and then going on to the resonators under the boot

As the 2+2 is 9inches longer than the coupes and OTS models, the exhaust system is also 9inches longer. This is probably where your 9inch problems (!) comes from.
The cars often have aftermarket systems fitted; I replaced the manifold and downpipes on my 2+2 with a stainless steel set of the correct dimensions, but it was too long because the aftermarket silencer box on my car was longer than standard. A few inches was cut off the new pipes in an appropriate place and all was well.

I've fitted a new stainless system to my 2+2 . The original system was 2 down pipes merging together and then splitting to the 2 boxes under the car. From there on it's the same as other types. I had the new system made as per the FHC design with separate down pipes leading to the middle boxes just like FHC cars. The down pipes had a 9 inch extension. Made by e type fabs and the fit was perfect. I think the 2+2 parts book shows a standard system correctly

Hi,

Bought my 2+2 SS exhaust from SNG and fitted very good apart from the straps holding the silencers. Original there are 2 different sized straps, but now they deliver 2 equal straps, so I had to make my own rubber mountings for better fit.

The only difference apart from longer main silencers is the down pipes, which enter twin silencers as normal. On an auto you have to have the siamesed down pipes in the central section to circumvent the big BW sump. On a manual you can make up custom extra-long twin pipes all the way to the twin silencers. Even on a standard wheelbase car the silencers are longer than 18" though.

Not like that on the 2+2 which I work on, Peter. It has 2 into 1 at the front, which then goes into a single wide box, from which 2 pipes emerge at the rear

my 2+2 (a series 2) was 2 into 1, then 1 pipe for about 9 inches, then back into two pipes before entering the first silencer. My SS replacement is 2 pipes all the way straight into the first silencer.

#10 2+2 Exhaust Sytem

Yes, the two mufflers are 9 " longer due to the length of the car. The exhaust configuration (two down, merge to one, then go back to two) was a result of Jaguar designing one system for the 2+2 automatic transmission and using the same for the manual. It was the only way to get around the automatic transmission box. You can convert to two separate pipes as found on all 4.2 L engines assuming your car is a manual transmission. I did it and also shortened the down pipes to provide a bit more clearance.

Cheers

Very non-standard down-pipe/silencer bits then Chris. See J38 (if it's in Knowledge Base?).
