#1 Front discs - keep or replace?

Post by Markymark » Mon Jan 05, 2015 7:46 pm

Hi Guys,
I've been lurking on this forum for a while now and have found it to be very useful.
Last year I imported a 69 OTS and I'm just cracking on with my list of winter jobs.
Whilst working on the front hubs I noticed that the discs look very old, thin and appear to have some edge chips. I think they should be replaced, but nothing was mentioned at the MOT, so wondered what you think?
I'm hoping you'll see some pics below....

Cheers,
Mark

I vote for change. Peace of mind. Minor cost. Minor job (DIY).

The discs are very cheap and to change them is the work of an afternoon at most. I would change them

PS I see you already have the hubs off - in that case it's perhaps 20 minutes a side to do

Unless the 'specialist' doing the work manages to shear a calliper mounting bolt resulting in some engineering being required. I took my chap 6hrs to change two discs, funnily enough that was the last piece of work I gave him.

The feeling may be mutual. I somehow doubt he purposely sheared off your bolt just to annoy you and charge you extra. In circumstancesz like this - which are extremely common on classic cars (especially in rust-prone climates) - traders typically under-charge. Often they do not recover their true hours, let alone aggravation. If you want by-the-book predictability then run a modern car.

I'm not saying the guy wasn't an idiot or a shyster, but I strongly suspect he was neither and it was all just par for the course. We sometimes forget things don't go according to plan. When you've worked on classic vehicles forty-odd years it's almost a bonus when it does...

Does anyone know what the "wire" in the middle of the S2 discs is for.
Also, is it possible to get replacements like that ?

I believe the wire is an anti-squeal ring. I bought 2 genuine Jaguar discs about 15 years ago and they were difficult to source then.

I replaced my S2 original discs 4 years ago as like the OP they had chips on the edges. Was unable to find original spec replacements with the anti squeal wire so I bought a pair of solid ones from SNGB which were surprising cheap 25 quid each from memory. Great performance and no squeal whatsoever, so I would say but new and don't worry
