#1 Jack type for 1965 FHC

Post by PaulColeman » Thu Jan 15, 2015 8:59 pm

Does anybody know what sort of jack a RHD 1965 (April) FHC
car should have? It's either a fixed or separate handle but
none of the books I have state which is correct.

Thanks, Paul.

FWIW the parts manual lists C20661 "jack complete with integral handle".

Haddock's guide states that the 4.2 jack had the separate handle.

The S1 4.2's had the Metallifacture with the integrated handle except for the 2+2's which had a different shoe. The jack was changed at about the point the S1.5 cars were rolling off the line and it was supplied with a separate handle although the shoe remained the same as on the S1 cars. I assume this was to simplify supply as the only difference now between the FHC/OTS and 2+2 was the different shoe which may have been riveted on at the Factory depending on demand - would have made sense. The integrated handle jacks are probably more common than the separate handle jacks. Rarest of the Metallifacture versions is the 1970/71 scissor jack with the cranked handle but same square shoe as used earlier. For the S3's they used this same jack but with a different shoe.

Personal experience - for non concours general use find the 1970/71 version as it is stronger, faster to raise and easier to use:

Alternatively buy the Metallifacture supplied with the XJ6 (~?50 from a scrap yard and is the separate handle version) and simply change the shoe which Richard Smith sells complete with rivet for ?25.

Mine has a fixed handle, assuming it's original to the car.

Thanks, Paul.
I would get one of the blow up air bag type until you redo the bodywork. Much kinder to fibreglass.

Thanks all for the info/comments (apart from Pete's of course).

There doesn't seem to be a definitive changeover date for the series 1 4.2 jack where it went from fixed handle to separate? Haddock just says early = fixed, later = separate.

Paul.

Your '65 car was supplied with a fixed handle jack. The earliest separate handle jack known so far, and original to the car (Mark Gordon), dates the change to early 1967.

Here you go: http://tinyurl.com/lpl9k6x although if, as Pete suggests, your car is anything other than concours ready why are you bothering about what jack it had?

C 20661 integral handle was still being shown on the S2 typed parts list long after your car Paul. The separate handle had also been listed for some time by then, so I assume the whole area is a bit vague. I wouldn't sweat it and, seriously, would not use an OEM single point jack on your car until/unless you have removed the outer sills to see what lies beneath.

I think you said something didn't line up at the B pillar or around the sill to rear quarter joint? These would be major contraindications to using a jack until you are ready to repair the damage (at which point, paradoxically, I'd give it a go to see what happened).

In practice, I think you can rest assured nobody is going to bitch about what kind of jack is in a 65 until you get on the lawn at Hurlingham or across the block at Sothebys.

Thanks. Why am I bothered?... just in case at some point in the future I come across one that doesn't require the sale of my first born that's all.
