As topic suggests, how much is OK to pay for unrestored 4.2 engine with gearbox, but no auxiliaries?
Also, what's needed and how much it may be to convert XJ6 4.2 engine to fit E-type?
Thank you!
Alex
What's fair price for Series 2 4.2 engine with gearbox?

An all synchro gearbox should be worth several thousand pounds. I would have thought that a genuine running E Type long motor would also be worth around the same, if a little less than the box.
To use an XJ6 engine you would need to use the E Type sump and oil filter and maybe the water pump. There can be some issues with clearance of the back of the head depending on XJ6 model. There may be other things; search for the topic: it has been covered a lot.

The going rate for an E type all synchro box in the uk is perhaps ?1000., rather less if it comes from a mark 2 jaguar . XJ6 engines are two a penny and worth perhaps ?200, possibly more if it was originally a manual . I am a little puzzled about your question , because if it is a series 2 E type engine, why the question about converting XJ6 ? or do you mean a series 2 XJ6 motor ?

I purchased engine with gearbox for ?3000 recently, and few days later was offered another set for about Eur 2500.
I assume it's not a bad price, considering that for overhauled I was asked ?12000 (yes, twelve!) for engine and ?2000 for gearbox...
Another question - is it worth buying Series 2 engine "just in case"? Eur 2500 doesn't seem to be a large amount comparing to ?12K, but I don't want to buy engine which is easily available at any time should I need it.

I have 1 XJ6 engine and 1 Daimler Sovereign engine + gearbox. I needed Series 2 engine with gearbox, so was considering an option to modify one of my engines to fit E-type.christopher storey wrote:The going rate for an E type all synchro box in the uk is perhaps ?1000., rather less if it comes from a mark 2 jaguar . Now I have purchased E-type engine, but was offered another one as per my post above. So, I am thinking - for the future, is it better to look for original engine, or try to modify one of my XJ6's?
