#1 Cylinder head gold paint

Post by Alty Ian » Sun Feb 08, 2015 7:24 pm

Can anyone recommend a source of the correct gold colour head paint for a S1 4.2 head please.

I have been waiting weeks for SNGB to supply it, they say they have an exact match but it comes from the USA and it isn't due in for another 3 weeks yet and I dont want to wait that long.

I have seen quite a few options but dont know which one is the right colour?

Any advice would be welcome

eBay vendors have excellent engine paint: e.g. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/251217569254?nav=SEARCH
I use it and brush finish is perfect.

Ian,

While I have bought stuff from Frost, I've never bought any engine paint. I remember seeing it in their catalogue when looking at black for the block and they are only in Rochdale.

I used a tiny (15ml) tin of Humbrol gold enamel (normally used by modellers)............plenty for head, brushed on and heat resistant as well. Much cheapness!

Yup, I used Plastikote gold enamel - still on 5 years later, and can be touched up with an artist's brush whenever you feel like it. About ? 3 from craft shops

The head on the 3.8 was sprayed with zinc chromate etch primer followed by 2 pack gold (can't remember exactly what it was), totally fuel and oil proof and unlikely to come up, but can still be touched up if needed. Protects the metal underneath better too.

I presume you mean the head on the 3.8 which you are acquainted with. I cannot imagine that Jaguar used two pack paint in the 1960s/70s

Correct Christopher, the head with which I am acquainted.
