What is involved in removing the stainless finisher?
I already have the Elan rear lights, which include reverse lights, and straight exhausts

Just get under the back of the car and you'll see the rivets etc.

Marek's right -it makes more improvement on an S2 for two main reasons:

The S2 bodywork around the boot floor is no deeper than the S1 tapered boot so removing the deeper stainless trim makes the tail look less heavy.

The s2rear lights are tacked on with the chrome trim pieces at the side to cover the gap. Unfortunately they also make the 'trailer board' effect look wider as well as deeper and removing them with the stainless plinth lightens the back end more, although you should paint the lamp bodies body-coulour to tidy up the area.

The S3 has a deeper boot so the trim being removed doesn't make as much difference and the lights are neatly embedded in the bodywork so there are no side trims to make the back look deeper. Plus on a V12 people generally keep the double or quad fan tail regardless, whereas S2 modifiers often go for S1 resonators as part of the change.

Having said all that, my silver FHC will probably be left standard apart from a raised numberplate and integrated reversing lamps, because the plinth and side chromes 'disappear' when the body colour is silver and in any cSe an S2 is still a pretty car.

Thanks Peter, and I agree the S2 is a very pretty car, much prefer the rear lights to the little piggy eyes of the S1 (ducking below parapet ready for incoming).

Doing lots on the car right now, so not immediately contemplating removing the stainless, but as mine is light blue the stainless does stand out more than on a silver car.

Feel free to put an advert in the For Sale section. Have you considered making the early S1 front indicators as they are not available new anywhere. Could be a good seller!

I've only just seen this - apologies for being a bit late to the party.

I think the reversing lights are handled much better now that they don't get in the way of the long style number plate. It's kind of obvious after the event.

kind regards
Marek

Superb work Marek! Huge improvement. What were Jaguar thinking of doing that way when Lucas had the integrated reversing light lenses on the shelf.

No, there's no valence on that car. I think the valence is in large part responsible for the 'trailerboard' vibe the S2 has in some colours.

With the valence removed and the chrome side mouldings ditto, the boot floor looks (and is) visibly higher from the back and the lamps seem to lie much closer together against the plain body colour.

I painted the lamp housings body colour so they didn't catch the eye and then generally relied on road dirt and exhaust fumes to give that final all-over identical tonal blend to the car's nether regions... Once established, the precious patina was carefully left in place during the annual 'washing the car' ritual - done every year or 5000 miles, whether it needed it or not

I followed Peter's lead after seeing his photo and dropped the valence. Because it's set further back, it has the added benefit of obscuring the number plate when observed from loftier (camera) heights! Although I think I could lift mine up a good inch or so!

Hello,
My two pences idea: Don't you think that try a rear series 2 bumper without puting the centre part of the bumper could be an improvement? and finish it with rear overiders like series 1 (I would have tried it if I didn't decide a complete transformation...) :?:

Jeff, I rather like the look of that. Using the MG lights adds a certain sleekness of the series 1 lights to the rear and fits more with the E-Type's curved rear end (?!) I think Neil did a quick photoshop of Pete's car once, it reminds me of that. Nicely done.

Your front may be a touch low, which will exacerbate the slight 'tail high' look of the rear bodywork.

It's what you get when you deleted the big, heavy, S2 rear lamp clusters. It's called 'Karma' :-)

I like it alot..
Much improvement over the butt ugly series 2 rear lights.
Did you buy complete rear lights and modfied it, or did you only use the glass and made up reflectors etc yourself?

Hi Jeff I really like your MGB rear light conversion . I have a 1968 S2 Fhc in Cape Town S.A. and am tempted to do the same. Is there a big difference between the early and later MGB rear lights and is it important to stick to the earlier model. What period of MGB lights would you recommend ( I think 1963 to 1970 is the earlier model ?) Many thanks Paul
