rear end wobble

I have noticed that at a speed of about 15 to 20 miles an hour the end of my series 3 has started to feel like it is shifting from left to right. the effect seem to go away at higher speeds.

I think this started after I missed seeing a wide speed hump on a car park exit. I went up the hump at a speed higher than I would of liked but not more than 5 mph. I would not of thought it was hard enough to do any damage.

Does any one have any ideas.

Dave,
Examine the area where the fwd end of the trailing arms mount to the floor... your donut cups may be making a bid for freedom.

Failing that, jack the body up until the rear wheels just come free of the ground, and look carefully at the "V" mounts holding the IRS to the body.

Almost certainly one or more of the rubber mounts if it came on all of a sudden, jack it up and have a good shake and inspect each mounting point, big and small radius arm rubbers, they are prone to splitting.

If it was a more gradual feeling of back end swaying then check the wishbone inner bearings. All IRS work is quite straightforward.

Thanks for the ideas will take a look. In all cases are the problems such that I should not drive the car. I have done a few miles since it happened and apart from the wobble it was OK. I am currently away from home with the car, but should I call out the recovery to get her home?

I had a Rover 2000 in the sixties that did precisely this , and more recently an S500 Mercedes which also did it. There was nothing wrong with them at all. On any IRS Jaguar , there is a considerable degree of compliance designed into the setup, hence the rubber mountings . If you are really worried about it, take it to the nearest tyre depot and get it on a ramp to look at it closely . I should have a good look at the radius arm mountings and the 4 rubber hangers for the suspension unit, and unless there is anything amiss I would drive it home at a modest pace.

As long as the front end of the traling arm isn't hanging down (or likely to on the drive home) you can drive the car cautiously in the condition it is.

Got home all safe and sound. Now need to get her to the garage and see what the issue is. Thanks for every one comments, will try to post details of final.fix.

Been meaning to post for a while but the outcome of this is that one of the hangers had split, replaced by the garage and all is well again.
