#1 Lower Wishbone Ball Joints

Post by melgrime » Thu Jul 30, 2015 9:30 am

I am rebuilding the front suspension on a 1967 4.2 FHC, and purchased all the bushes and joints as a "kit" from Barratts. The problem I am having is that the spigots fitting over the ball joint appear to be too big to fit in the Hub Carrier. The diameter of the lower section of the spigot is correct for the lower recess on the carrier, but the diameter of the upper section which protrudes above the casting and has the groove for the rubber gaiter is about 10 thou too big to be pressed home. The parts manual indicates C 15339, for earlier cars and C 22974 for later (my) cars. C 15339 has been superseded by C 30952 and C 22974 is no longer available. Barratts confirm that the kit contains C30952.

The question is should I shave off 10 thou of the Hub Carrier to allow the kit spigots to fit, or should I replace the whole ball joint with the later sealed type?

From memory there are shims.

Far better to just dispense with the old and fit the XJ6 sealed units.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about as it is really technical (and I use to speak french... so).
But I had also a big problem with the lower fishbone until I realized there was kind of rind the the Hub Carrier...

Yes, if you went for original style you need shims.

In my '62 I took out the originals and installed sealed for life. 4 shims on each I found. Two very thin and a couple fatter ones.

Knock the rings out and fit sealed for life B/Js. You will need shorter setscrews.

#6 Lower Wishbone ball joints

Post by melgrime » Sun Aug 09, 2015 3:40 pm

Have cleaned out the lower casting and managed to fit the new spigot. When assembled with new ball and socket there is still a problem. Assembling without any shims ball is slack in joint --- about 30 thou. Convinced there must be a problem with bits supplied. Have decided to fit sealed for life XJS units which seem to work just fine. Should have done this originally and saved a whole load of trouble.

Mel : in fact, I think you will find it is XJ40 units which fit without any trouble - all you need to do is remove the ring for retaining the dust covers, and shorten the bolts slightly . Whether the XJS ones are the same I don't know
