I can provide an adapter plate to connect a Getrag to a Jag bell. You need to give waaay more detail about the spec of the car you hope to convert. A name and a sprinkling of punctuation wouldn't go amiss either, but I may be a dinosaur on that stuff.frenchi wrote:can anyone help with the conversion on to a 4.2 is the getrag a bmw box or a jag box are they the same just trying to sorce the bits

I envy your skill - you may need it. At least you have a long wheelbase tub so you have a bit more room. Is it from an auto or manual car? Have you got a V5 hor it because DVLA are getting picky.frenchi wrote:its hard to writs .dislexier . i have a 2x2 67 4.2 baire shell at the mo i am a fabricator welder by trade can make most stuff, does any manual bellhousing fit .ie 3.2 or does it have to be 4.2
Any bell will do for a Getrag so long as the flywheel is the same and preferably the starter although you can get modern replacements. You dhould be able to make up a top remote linkage from photos then and the gearbox mount and crossmrmber mods should be OK for you.

Sort of, but mostly no :-)christopher storey wrote:Peter : have you seen the other thread in which Frenchii asked if a 3.2 litre bellhousing ( he doesn't say whether AJ engine or V8 ) will fit a 4.2 litre XK , and I said no ? Was I wrong ??
You can fit an entire 3.2/3.6/4.0L I6 Getrag setup (no such thing as a manual AJV8) including bell, by using a large ring adapter at the block face. This is a common part for V12s. Technically you can do it for the XK too but there are much better options.
What I really meant was any XK bell, as he had cited 3.8/4.2 IIRC. As you know, a 3.8 would have been OK, since the normal requirement to open out the bearing recess for a 4.2 box doesn't apply when using a Getrag box set back from the bell rear face by a 3/8" or 1/2" thick adapter plate.

You can do 3/8" in steel but I've seen 1/2" alloy with studs rather than bolts. I have one of each spare. I've never fitted a 1/2" and wonder about pilot bearing engagement. Could fabricate a special top hat protruding bush I guess.frenchi wrote:thanks for your advice, should have spoke to you in the beginingi know what options i have plus thickness of marry plate ,
What you must remember is that if you pick a Jag bell you have to have a matching flywheel and starter for the same model if you want to avoid mesh hassles. The 3.8 meshes back to front (Bendix) where the 4.2 meshes front to back (pre-engaged). The flywheel teeth wear to suit, although usually you can grt a gear reduction starter to work with both types.
But really, if you don't have a short box I'd be careful, even in a 2+2, especially if it has no speedo drive. Just too many fabrication and driveshaft and cutting hassles to get a fifth gear, when an overdrive box is all Jag parts and no modifications needed.
