#1 Changing the colour

Post by PhilP » Mon Sep 28, 2015 5:25 pm

Has anybody had any experience or changed the colour of there car. I've seen a good genuine car but not in the colour I want its red and I would like silver as it seems to shrink the 2+2 silhouette I know it's impossible to put a price to it but has anybody got a ball park figure and any recommendations on where to get it done
Thanks
Phil

Ask Angus, he'll give you a ballpark figure.

To do it properly means a complete strip down and back to bare metal. You will end up restoring the entire car at huge cost. A good paint job on a sound shell will cost you ?10k. Try it any other way and you will devalue the car enormously. You could of course consider a vinyl wrap in the colour of your choice. Lots of companies offering the service and you can return the car to original relatively easily.

Doing it right isn't going to be cheap, even if you don't develop shipwrights disease.

Last year I got quoted ?14K in the UK for a turnkey exterior and under bonnet job, strip down (chrome, lamps, screens, hardware etc, engine out), strip off paint, sanding filler & paint, re-assembly.

I ended up doing the whole thing myself, with just a local lad doing the exterior clearcoat in his booth. I have my own booth with pucka filters and fans, but no heating element, which is crucial at this time of the year.

My outlay was around ?3-4K in materials, and several hundred hours of work during the summer. Which you can either consider to be free, and/or to equate to the missing ?10K (200hrs x 50 quid/hr).

Thanks for the replies I still might go down this route as I've only seen one silver 2+2 for sale and this hadn't been painted that well. Is the silver or gunmetal grey a commonly used colour from new on the 2+2 I've seen plenty off FHC and convertibles in these colours.

Don't know common it is, but my Dec 1966 S1 2+2 is now Opalescent Gunmetal Grey (was Pale Primrose). I considered the Silvers also. Same dilemma as Chris Rooke had in his book.

Hi Phil,

You can search xkedata.com on either original or current external colour.

Cool combination David, my first E-type (1995) had that color and was 2+2 with automatic (ex USA). Sold it a year later to get into a '65 FHC. Still regret, it was in fantastic condition w greenish leather interior. I still think the nuance was a bit more "greenish" than op.gunmetal though. I think it resides in Lillestr?m now.

Yeah, there's someone in Lillestr?m who has been trying to sell a Metalifacture 2+2 jack for about a year. Each time the ad comes out for a new 60 days the price has gone up. Now it's at ?400. Maybe that's from your old car :D

Lovely picture, btw !
