#1 Gaz shocks vs the Boge

Post by andrewh » Sun Oct 04, 2015 6:03 pm

Am just deciding on whether to splash out on a set of Gaz shocks for the Roadster or try the Boge which seem very popular and good value? I have Konis on my 3.8 FHC and rate them very highly the ride is superb. I am drawn to the adjustable platform and damping on the Gaz. All thoughts and experiences much appreicated

Hi Andrew.....when I refurbed the front end of my S2 2+2 I used Boge....and they were fine, however when jacking up the front I found that the full drop of the shock was slightly too long and caused the steering rack to pull down....This turned out to be track rod end ball joints not having enough angular movement.....SNG had some of there GAZ shocks made slightly shorter to solve this problem.....I tried a pair and it did work however the real issue was the ball joints which SNG have now produced to give a greater angle of movement, so I tried these track rod ends with my boge and all was good.......so I have a pair of GAZ the slightly shorter ones from Sng that have been on the car but never driven on if you need them........The track rod end and shock length issue has been well documented on the forum....Steve

I had Koni's but replaced them with Boge because a) three Koni's failed on me after 12,000 miles b) Koni's do not suit the E-Type and compromise ride/handling, c) they are stupidly expensive for something no E-Type owner is ever going to 'adjust'.

If you are wedded to Koni's set them at their softest setting and see how you get on. Of course re-setting them if you are not happy is another challenge! Never understood why people want 'adjustable' shocks on a road E-Type. Porsche and Lotus do not fit them as standard because their engineers know their job. Putting them on the E-Type is a bit of a slap in the face of Norman Dewis, telling him he did not have a clue!

I know I have a S3 but I fitted Gaz..the thinking been if you spend more money you get a better result......

Set them to half way was terrible. So set them to soft and that seemed to ride better. Wish I had just fitted Boge?????

Ah, thanks chaps. Got the usual variety of opinions here. I really was only considering the choice of GaZ vs Boge as I have already got Konis on the other car...which I like David, perhaps without wishing to open another discussion, it's down to the tyres, wheels and suspension bushes as well as the shocks?

I am upgrading this car a bit and hence my enquiries on the Gaz vs the Boge. I do agree that the Konis are a pain to adjust anyway. I also am suspicious of the Boge as they seem so cheap?

Not a problem. I'll sell you a set at double retail elsewhere. Just give me time to buy them. You win I win, we all win.
