From the beguining you make a mistake with the felt seal retainer, you put it in the wrong way ! As mgcjag tell you, It's to keep the grease in and road grime out.

you come for the first time in this forum with certitudes, do not seek advice from those who have already done this work properly, stay with your certitude!
Very sorry I spend time to try to understand something to someone who does not want to understand.

Sold your E Type man, and rapidly!
Scraching head so much for this simple work is not a good sign for you.
You are going to loose your head because E Type is a world that obviously you'll not understand...

Mich
So, I thank you kindly. And you get angry with me. I see.

Are you auditioning for the job of wife. lol

That's ok.

To finish this post before killing you... 3 photos with all the parts.

1 - The parts ( with the C16628 ) and the mounting way. Large shim at last.

2 - Just to show you the "Sandwich". Don't mount it before like this, it's just for your understanding.

3 - And for the other side? YOU ASK ME FOR THE OTHER SIDE ??

Have a good day and done a good job NOW

Ok, that's fantastic pic. Will you marry me?

Believe it or not, that's the way I put it in; it just doesn't look right.

hmm. I knew something looked different. See that felt seal in the pic? I had some NOS same # from same vendor that I had gotten quite some time ago. Comparing the two, the new one furnished in the kit is about 33% thicker.

SKF part #11124 is a modern lip seal replacement. Use it and you won't have to ponder the intricacies of felt thickness.

that will replace just the felt and felt holder, right? Still use the large hole washer on the end.

Good luck if you can make it work without those washers...

IIRC I left out the fulcrum shaft spacer AND the retaining washer - can't remember for certain but I did leave at least on part of the original arrangement out.

I just checked the left overs bag for that assembly. You are correct...both the spacer and the washer are omitted...along with the felt and the cup. I was remembering the washer as part of the spacer/shim stack....wrong. (two years ago) My apologies for earlier response.

Could someone clarify the function of part C.20180 ?

Image

My original felt-seal assemblies are complete with the "container" or cup, the felt, the closing "retaining" washer that sits against the felt, and the centre spacer or core that bolts up hard with the shaft.

The function of all these parts is clear to me, the set-up has worked perfectly for decades.

However the C.20180 part is variously referred to as a spacer or a seal, and I do not have these.

https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#/UK ... 0C20180%60

Could some kind soul tell me where they go, and what they do ?

Are they a distance piece that establishes a gap between the outer race (of the conical bearing) and the felt-seal carrier ? Perhaps superfluous, which is why I haven't got them ?

Or are they an elastic sealing ring to reduce the ingress of muck between the hub-carrier and the wishbone ?

Any informed light most welcome.

Having operated the keyboard, I then decided to engage my brain.

And my eyes.

Those parts ARE present, just buried in clean grease.

The C20180 parts are steel spacer rings that sit inside the bore of the alloy hub carrier, against which the pressed-steel felt-carrying cups are pressed.

I'll now disappear for another year or so, no great loss apparently ;-)

No! Please don’t disappear. Your honesty, instead of deleting the other post, has made me smile.
Now carry on with your New Year’s resolution to get your car on the road and enjoying driving it again.
Good luck with getting it all finished, Rory.
