impressive ! thanks for spotting this site
I realize I do not have the right jack for my S2 2+2
should have the "forked pad" and I have the "holed pad" of the S3 and XJ6
anyone wants to swap ? should work the same, though
;)

I think you're better off with the more secure design. If it slipped off the open-side design on uneven ground you could be well and truly forked...

Very interesting research, but they have missed something on the Metallifacture details. For a period of only a few months around June 1962, the jacks were stamped, "Patent Applied For." until the 9th August 1962 when the patent was approved (hence the subsequent stamping 903079). The following Chassis Nos apply: 850549-850580; 860661-860785; 877519-877848; 886247-886564. My car is 860709 and I sourced one of these via the following site. www.etypetoolss.co.uk for further information on jacks, tools, handbooks etc. Maikel sells many items similar to the above.

The guy who runs the Metallifacture site is Steve Gyles ( sw.gyles@gmail.com ) and he is happy to receive feedback.

Couple of Jack related questions as I am looking for one for my S2 FHC. I note there are cheaper metalifacture jacks on eBay that are similar to the standard S2 Jack but do not have the centre foot, instead they seem to have a raised foot at the end of jack furthest from the main foot. Lotus/cortina often being cited as the doner car. Can these be modified by replacing the incorrect pad for the square locating pad and are these pads available from R Smith?
Similarly can the later S3 or XJ scissor jack again be converted for S2 use by replacement of the locating pad for the correct one?

Yes, the Cortina jacks can be used if you replace the 'shoe' (available from Richard Smith along with the rivet). Ditto the S3/XJ jack scissor jack.

From another thread:
"The S1 4.2's had the Metallifacture with the integrated handle except for the 2+2's which had a different shoe. The jack was changed at about the point the S1.5 cars were rolling off the line and it was supplied with a separate handle although the shoe remained the same as on the S1 cars. I assume this was to simplify supply as the only difference now between the FHC/OTS and 2+2 was the different shoe which may have been riveted on at the Factory depending on demand - would have made sense. The integrated handle jacks are probably more common than the separate handle jacks. Rarest of the Metallifacture versions is the 1970/71 scissor jack with the cranked handle but same square shoe as used earlier. For the S3's they used this same jack but with a different shoe. Personal experience - for non concours general use find the 1970/71 version as it is stronger, faster to raise and easier to use:

Alternatively buy the Metallifacture supplied with the XJ6 (~?50 from a scrap yard and is the separate handle version) and simply change the shoe which Richard Smith sells complete with rivet for ?25."

Drill out rivet, remove shoe, replace shoe, replace rivet, hammer rivet end over.
