pedal box 66 series 1 4.2
#1 pedal box 66 series 1 4.2
Can any kind soul tell me why my pedal box on my 66 series one 4.2 does not resemble the box in the parts book or workshop manual? I am trying to work out how to remove the pedal shaft to strip down and replace return springs? The pedal box I have ( LHD) is the same as another car I have looked at and has both the clutch master cylinder as well as the brake master cylinder mounted to it on two studs each. The shaft appears blind on one end and has a nylon on the opposite end with a square drive in on the shaft. I am mystified why all the illustrations appear to show a 3.8 set up, unless the LHD box is different to what is the book, RHD?
the books show a pedal box which has the brake master cylinder mounted on a bracket bolted to the main alloy housing , much like, but not identical to the 3.8. were there two 4.2 pedal boxes then?

Hi Andrew,
The housing changed around mid 65 to the more square one.
It doesn't show the change in the series One parts manual, but it is mentioned for the Series Two.

I think ours is the earlier one on my very early S1 4.2 as shown below.

Sounds like yours is the later one in one piece aluminium like my S3.

Thank you both for your replies. I have now worked out by virtue of checking suppliers websites that there are two types of pedal boxes as you mention. Ian yours is referred to as the cross over type. Hence it resembles the 3.8 type as I said earlier. All I need now is the instructions for the late type box. I can guess how it comes apart but don't want to chew anything up.

Andrew, please report back if you find out on your own. While working on the cockpit I removed the brake/clutch pedals but the throttle pedal looked involved so I masked it up and moved on to other things. I would love to know how it is supposed to be disassembled.
Thanks!
Jim

Stripping down the later box is really easy as there are no splines to worry about so pedal height is easily set.

Well that's good news. Presumably by turning the shaft after unlocking the nut?

Is the box out of the car? Undo the locknut and tap the shaft through (note the order of washer, spacer and springs first though. Chances are the pedal springs will be broken.

i am not sure Jim whether you looking to remove the pedal box or the throttle pedal. The former is detailed in the brake section of the series 3 workshop manual to be found in technical on our forum. hope this helpsvrracing wrote:Andrew, please report back if you find out on your own. #11 Re: pedal box OTS 1962 (Nov 11)
Hi all,
I haveseveral questions about colours and finish .
Link arms: black or cadmium or mix.?
Front cover servo assembly: black or alu.?
When dismantling I noticed a return spring on the clutch pedal and a spring on the lock nut on the pedal shaft for the brake pedal. Wich is the correct setting. On explodedcview of the brake controls I cannot find any return springs at all?
Master cylingers should be in casted finish. Is it ok to paint them to casted finish?
Last question.: I have seen different way of fitting the master cylinders. Should the nut be inside the housing or on the cylinder and what kind of bolts and nuts?
Hope to get some input !

For the correct component colours check out bottom of this post in the Forum Knowledge Base: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=108901#p108901
A clutch pedal return spring C19010 was fitted only to LHD cars up to 875858/885104. The 4.2 cars had a return spring on the shaft. The 3.8 cars had a brake pedal return spring on the main shaft.
You can find the Jaguar nut/bolt decoder in the Forum Knowledge Base but here is a download link:
Jaguar Nuts, Bolts and Fasteners specs: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vbkgbwl4b3tyc ... s.pdf?dl=1
Use the parts manual to find the bolt/nut part number e.g. UFS.131/8R and then decode its spec.
