#1 S2 handbrake

Post by Hugo » Wed Sep 14, 2016 5:20 pm

I am trying to get some brakes on my recently acquired S2 roadster; I can't seem to get enough adjustment on the handbrake - the main cable is fully extended at the rear adjuster, and the little cross-link shaft is as short as it will go, yet the handbrake barely works. Is there anything at the front I can adjust? Or something I have missed?

I can't even see the handbrake pads or calipers! Your links don't work either I'm afraid - one is about something different, the others don't come up. Not doing very well am I? :(

Mine had a repro cable on and It was about 1/2" too long. I'm not sure if there was a period when the repro ones were incorrect but it could be a possible cause. The advice was to get one from Jaguar Enthusiast Club which are the correct length. Perhaps you could ask them what length their cable is and compare with yours - if only to rule out the cable length.

Sorry to be a dummy again - how do I find the Jag manual? The problem is I can't even see the handbrake calipers from underneath. Are there supposed to be inspection hatches in the floor? Can't find them either! Nothing in the boot/trunk. Don't know if I mentioned, but the back end has had a lot of work done by the previous owner in S. Carolina. The diff looks new (3.54 unfortunately - I counted the turns) and all the calipers, pads & brake lines look brand new. This was obviously done with the rear carrier out.

Oh and once again - what is at the front of the cable? Anything I can do there? Can't see a thing from underneath & I haven't ripped the interior trim out yet.

Hi Hugo..have a look here on the SNG site if you dont already know they sell jag spares and lots of diagrams on there site contact them for one of their catalogues..really usefull...if your going to work on the car you really need the Jaguar service manual..SNG sell them they are also in the knowledge base section for use by anyone that already has a hard copy..
There is no adjustment at the front end of the cable...some cars have access plates cut in above the irs to make brake maintenance easier, check it out

Hugo, if you join the JEC (Jaguar Enthusiasts Club) they sell the manuals and on your first purchase you get a small discount. Manuals, owners handbooks, plus Ken Jenkins is one of their technical experts and he sells the correct length handbrake cables.

As Heuer says in the Knowledge Base, Technical Information and Documentation section, everyone who owns an E Type MUST own a copy of the manual, but the manual is also available to download for printing off to have to hand in the workshop.
I'm sure most do just that, I have the manual for complete reference, but print out pages for ease of use when working on particular parts of the car.

As Steve has pointed out, if you buy parts from SNGB they will send you a copy of the parts book. It is thick and heavy but a wonderful reference for seeing which parts go where. They are about the most used supplier, though not perfect.
