Good evening all.
something that has bothered me for a while is the fact the my steering wheel moves slightly ( 6mm or so) back and forward despite the clamping knurled nut being a good hand tight. This happens irrespective of where the wheel is set from the dash.
does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

steering wheel fore & aft movement
#2 Re: steering wheel fore & aft movement
Tim, check the Universal joint at the bottom of the colimn is tight. If it is, check the UJ near the rack. If they are all ok, get someone to pull on the wheel while you physically check where the movement is.tim wood wrote:Good evening all.

just resurrecting this thread as my steering wheel has the same for and aft on both my restored 3.8 and the unrestored car. Its the lower universal joint onto the rack in both instances. But the allen key bolt is tight as I can get it without unreasonable effort. Are they meant to have this free play on the column or should I really tighten the bolt more. Worried that it will break the bolt.

Had a bit of movement on the lower UJ splines a couple days ago. Likewise , allen bolt seemed tight but got a 'nip' more on it and the movement disappeared. Tightened up the higherUJ bolts at same time -all good!

Hi all,
When investigating mine the problem turned out to be the bolt securing the column to the rack splines wasn't tight enough and thus pulling on the wheel allowed the column to shift along the spline.
Ended up tightening the Allen bolt with a hex key in a ratchet drive. No problem since

thanks Chaps I need to get some hex drives for the socket bar. Usually they only need a pinch more to tighten onto the splines. cheers Andrew
