XK Engine

I was at an exhibition here in Switzerland yesterday at the Emil Frey Classics Centre. They had as part of the Jaguar exhibition, an XK Engine with cut-away sections. So I took a few pictures for those that may be interested.

You've remnded me I made cutaway 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines for the school my sons attended. I asked them were they ever taught about engines but I don't think they were.

Having never taken apart an XK engine... or actually any other engine for that matter, I found it invaluable. I knew roughly how it all worked together, but actually seeing it inside really solidified it in my mind.

I agree that seeing function helps understanding. I have a large model collection and have tried to collect every model of Series 1 FHC E types ever produced in die cast models and plastic model kits.

Another collection is of Hohm Driving School models from Germany. We have travelled to Germany to collect the individual component models such as rear axles, gearboxes, front suspension and the main Chassis models which all German Driving Schools had to have by law to teach their pupils the theory sections of the test. In typical Germanic fashion they are beautifully made and fully functioning. I try to collect the earlier 1950's models as these are made with metal components which in later years were changed to more use of plastic. The engine model and the one in the 1956 Chassis model features the top of the range "Glass" engine which is belt driven from underneath to show how the valves are driven from the cam and even the distributor is gear driven from the cam to light the spark plugs from it's rotor arm. When running, you can take the model through all the gears, (3 speed with reverse) and operate the lighting and braking systems.









Such a shame these models are not used now as they explain far more than words could ever do.
