Stolen!!! E type series 1
#41 Re: Stolen!!! E type series 1
It just makes me realise what a bunch of Shylocks the Insurance Companies are. I once lost a mint hardly used car transporter. The Insurance company was NFU and their loss adjuster was a real cheap suit. Trying to chip me on the payout. I was livid. It was a brand new trailer so I wanted a replacement brand new trailer. Eventually I dug my feet in and told him to "do the right thing, pay up and look big" They did but i moved all my insurances from them at renewal and haven't been back since. I mean the only time you want an Insurance company to do the right thing is when you have a loss...they failed.

Part of the "problem" is that the loss adjusters are "incentivised" on maximising the margin between what we get and what we ought to get.......

We got burgled some years ago. I nearly caught him but the bas.... ran a lot faster than me!
My wife had some 22 carat gold chains dating from the sixties that her parents had given her for a rainy day. They were worth a lot we thought. Despite no mention of it in the policy the loss adjuster said we had to accept vouchers that could be exchanged at Ratners. Went to Ratners with the one remaining one that wasn't stolen and the manager said they sold "paper" gold with patterns and these were quality. The loss adjuster said £140 ach in vouchers or £80 cash. I held out and got them to value the remaining one and they paid £600 each! Took six months and they chipped me on every other item. You really need pictures and receipts, even more important with an E-Type and what could be a subjective value.

Which is why when householders have been burgled they claim for a lot more than was actually taken, I am lucky I have never been burgled.
Pushing it there I suppose!

I am resuscitating this thread because last night, while reading November's The Automobile, I came across a report which clearly refers to the FHC stolen in Dover which states that it has been recovered and restored to its rightful owner. I should like to know if this is correct

I do hope so...that would be a good way to start the new year.....hopefully those responsible have also been brought to book and will be spending a considerable time out of circulation...

An old boy who I know owns a 3.8 FHC he restored many years ago. He had registered in Petronal Paynes E type register sometime in the 80s or early 90s. Anyway, he rang me as he had had a call from an Irish fella asking whether he still had the car and whether he could recommend someone to rebuild his gearbox. He was calling on a mobile from Belfast. I was slightly concerned as in this day and age a man in Belfast does not need to refer to a 30 year old list of E type owners , that included addresses, to find someone to rebuild a gearbox. I mean any Jaguar magazine, a quick google or umpteen other sources would yield a result. I cannot help but be a bit concerned that it could be someone trying to find out whether the old boy still has the car or not. I have told him to be very security conscious over the next weeks or so. Terrible worry . Aston Martin Owners Club have now taken their register on line via member log in to try to reduce some of the risk from lists of cars and owners addresses falling into the wrong hands.

Agreed. But then we do have the map on this website...
It would be a lovely surprise to get a call about my two E-types one day. Ain't gonna happen though, is my guess :-(

Sadly, the car stolen in Dover has not been recovered. Wish it wre so, but no, the car has never been seen again and is probably adorning some russian mafia garage as we speak.
As regards the JDC register, it still exists but the new edition, due out in 2016, has not appeared due to the long illness and recent death of my dear friend Petronel Payne. However, we hope a new one will be published but of course without addresses or telephone numbers. The entry forms for this register allowed people to choose whether their names, address and telephone numbers could be shown and it was up to the owner, not the JDC. Mine used to be published which resulted in it appearing in several films and documentaries in the days gone by but I wouldn't bother now. We were younger then! This of course was in the days when the cars weren't an investment but only a car, but if and when the new directory appears it would no longer contain any of the details. I keep adding cars to it as I find them on the internet. It was only started about 30 years ago as a way of knowing which cars still existed and could never be fully exhaustive of course. Hope this reassures you all.
