Hi
I'm trying to track down where exhaust fumes are getting into the car on the over-run and notice there seems to be a large formed hole in the panel below the fuel tank, when looking up from under the car. Is this supposed to have some sort of plug in it? Is this a likely source of the fumes?
I've noticed that the rear hatch seal is at least partly responsible, though I still get fumes when this is sealed off, though to a lesser degree. It only happens when the windows are down.
Thanks
Graeme

There is a hole about 50mm in diameter where the fuel tank drain plug/sump pokes down through. There is a foam pad around the drain sump that seals the hole from water ingress and presumably fumes too. There are no other large holes under the tank so far as I know. I was plagued with fumes . These it turned out were from the front where the cast manifolds connect to the down pipes. These joints are sealed with big metal "O" ring type seals. Mine were ill fitted and not sealing. Might be worth looking along the exhaust system as well as the rear of the car. Start the car outside and hold a bit of tissue paper near any joints and see if the paper flutters indicating they leak.

Check the rubber grommet where the handbrake cable exits the body. If you have a look and say "What grommet?" this will most likely be the source of entry. Fumes will make their way into the car very easily if this item is missing.
