Mudshield fixings

Just doing a few of those little jobs that I never got round to finishing. There are a couple of mounting brackets for the mudshields left and right that are riveted on - parts BD20424 and BD20425.

While it is clear, they are rivet onto the shields, it isn't clear how they fix to the frames - the big round hole.
Any guidance on this? Very hard to see from pictures of cars on the internet how this is done.

Hi Mark...the 2 ofset holes rivet to the mudshield as you say just by the rear upper wishbone mount..the larger hole bolts to the short piece of plate between the frame rails above the upper wishbone rear mount....hope this makes sense...if not can get you a photo tomorrow... Steve

I think I get it. On the left hand side there is a P-Clip that secures the alternator loom on this plate. So I imagine the bracket attaches on the underside of this.

The right hand side, the air intake shield attaches to the plate.

I'm a little confused as the holes are so big on the brackets. I'd expect them to have only been the size of the bolts.

Photos of the brackets on the plates left and right would be very much appreciated. Also so I get them the right way up, although I think it is the long side on top from looking.

The hole is so big because there is a special clip on captive nut that fits over the end of the bracket.

Looking at the catalogues I can't seem to locate this. I assume it is like a spire nut but instead of taking a self tapping screw it has a captive nut on it to take a setscrew.

Next question is, anyone know where this is documented for the part numbers, length / size of set screws being used etc. on each side.

Yes it is a 1/4"UNF nut in a little cage that clips on. Can't find it in the parts manual either but I'm positive; I fitted a set of splash shields on Thursday.

The shields are held in with 1/4" bolts 5/8" long. These have nuts, shakeproof washers and BD541/20 "special" washers, but I just use ordinary ones.

The only one I have found so far is C21255 - anchor nut. From the part number, I had hoped it was the 1/4" (UNF125/xx) but sadly not. It appears to be the anchor nut used on the brake and clutch bottles assembly attaching them to the heatshield bracket and takes a UNF131 5/16"
