#1 Newbie to the Forum

Post by AndySkinner » Tue Jan 17, 2017 2:09 pm

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would 'pop my head in' and say hello to everyone on what looks like a truly fantastic forum.

A tiny bit about me, i'm 27, live just outside Ross On Wye with my girlfriend. We both absolutely love classic cars (me more than her!!) and currently own a 1959 Morris Minor, a 1973 VW Beetle, Bedford CF1 camper and currently restoring a 1966 Ford Mustang.

Jaguar E-types have always been the absolute ultimate car for me (despite sadly being completely out of my price range). Don't think there is anything out there that can beat it on elegance and design flare. Such a shame they don't make them like that anymore.

I have come to realise the the most realistic way of me ever getting close to the experience of owning a E-Type would be to go down the JPR Wildcat route. So I am currently on the lookout for a restoration project if anyone knows of one? I will post a proper advert in the wanted section too. :)

Hope to have many fun and interesting conversations with people on the board in the future.

Kind Regards
Andy Skinner

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the forum

Tbh, we rarely see any cars (original or replica) for sale on this forum these days !

I believe there are separate owner club websites for both the Wildcat & Challenger replica cars so they may be worth a go (as well as Ebay, Pistonheads, etc).

What's your budget ?

Good luck in your search.

Regards,
Neil

Hi Andy.....great introduction...welcom to the forum.....not too far from you......getting into e types is an expensive business now.....no cheap way in.... the wildcat and look at the challenger.....are a good alternativ from a looks point of view..only those really into E types would reall know the difference  .....you never know your luck someone here may have one tucked away.......i saw one in a farmers yard not to long ago...thought id found an old E type......unfortunatly it was stolen a while ago, they probably thought it was a real one......also keep looking at ebay for E types they do come up with different engins fitted sometimes which could give you a real E but wrong engine for less money that you could improve in the future...all the best.. Lovely place, Ross. As are the roads thereabouts.
This shot was taken in the White Lion, WIlton, as I took a lunch break on my way to mid-Wales.

Hi guys,

Thank you for the warm welcome! This really seems like a lovely club. I hope to be able to have some input eventually.

Budget for a Wildcat would be up to £5k which I know is tight and why realistically it would need to be a restoration project. Im very hands on and love restoring not just cars but anything mechanical. The Morris Minor was my first car at 18 and restored by myself many years ago!

I do love the challenger but a bit to pricey to me, I also am looking forward to hopefully having the challenge of making improvements to the Wildcats design.

Fantastic picture Chrisfell, we have only just moved into our first house in the area so still exploring but some of the roads are to die for. Can just imagine an E-type flowing around the lanes with its distinctive rasp!

Interesting point Steve, if I were to save a bit more, how much would a typical modified E-type fetch these days?

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum.
Nice presentation, wishing you to find sometime down the road the E of your dreams.
The replicas do pop up from time to time, but it would be difficult to find any at 5k. Here is incidentally one spotted in France for illustration : https://www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/10767 ... tm?ca=17_s

Hi Andy

Welcome to the forum.

I never knew about the Challenger until I saw three at the NEC in November. Until someone explained it, I thought they were real e-types so it shows how good they are.

If you are not able to afford a real one, have pleasure in looking like it at a fraction of the price. The problem with a real one is, as others have remarked elsewhere, you can always find something to spend more money on.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I wanted an E type first when I was about 14 and was taken out in a brand new series 1. (My dad worked in a garage!) Just to prove dreams do come true, I finally got one almost 50 years later; let's hope you don't have to wait that long! In the meantime, if you're ever in Fleet, Hampshire, I could always take you out for a quick run in mine while the wife does the shopping!

Well I might be wrong, and I don't want to put a damper on your aspirations, but I have a feeling that prices of all classic cars are only going to shoot up. I was at an auction recently where most cars exceeded their estimates by about 50%. A Morris Marina pick-up even sold for £6,700! I sold an Aston DB6 about 8 years ago for just over £40,000. I thought the prices were going to fall (who wants non-emissions-compliant gas guzzlers in the current political climate?), instead of which they immediately rocketed. It would fetch quarter of a million today. There's a dentist in Bristol who's probably very happy now! All my life I have owned Astons, and now I can't afford one!
Last year I bought a Series II convertible LHD import from N. Carolina for £40,000. Pretty sound original condition, but needing a lot of work. If you look at the way prices are going, I don't think you'll be able to pick up any convertible car of a similar calibre for anything like that sum for very much longer. I would suggest a US import is probably the cheapest route to ownership. I was intending to drive mine for a bit before starting work, but the clutch was slipping so badly it couldn't be driven. So now the darn thing's in a million bits!
