#1 Wave washer S2 Steering Column
My steering column has noticeable play. When I dismantled it a cleaned it years ago I don't recall any wave washer at the bottom. I now understand a wave washer is required to put pre load on the lower tapered roller berarings.
The XKE Books illustrated S2 partes maanual does not show an exploded parts diagram of the S2 steering column by Chris Vine gave a great write up on it:
http://etype.chrisvine.com/2013/10/over ... ng-column/
any suggestions how to get rid of the play???
Interestingly I am getting annoying steering wheel vibration between 60-70 mph but notwithstanding the steering column play the steering is very nice and non vibrating at all other speeds.........

#2 Re: Wave washer S2 Steering Column
I had a broken wavy washer resulting in loads of play in the column with the taper bearings on my S2.
The part was not available.
I took the remains of the washer to an engineering workshop who gave me loads to try.
That solved the problem.

Thank you James. sadly I don't have the original one so no remnants to take to a fastener supply shop :(

I'd be looking at wheel balance.db7gtgrigio wrote:

Yes Andrew I am going to do that but I am struggling to find anyone in Sydney who knows how to do wire wheels properly. The modern dynamic balancers apparently cant handle wires......
The steering wheel shake is only 60-70mph at all other speeds smoooooth

They just need the correct cones to fit the wheel to the machine.
If you ask one of the Jag people in Sydney who they use I'm sure they will be able to do them.
Alternatively you can buy a set of cones or modify an old knockoff hub.

well that is what I thought until I read this thread which suggests that modern dynamic balancing machines don't work well with wires...abowie wrote:They just need the correct cones to fit the wheel to the machine.

I don't know anything about the science of wheel balancing so I can't comment on Dougal's opinion.
All I can tell you is that one of the boys over here has a Corghi EM8370 balancing machine with a set of cones for Jag wires. He balances all our wheels for us and they seem fine.
