Repair cracked sump

Hi does anyone know could this sump be repaired, It came on a 4.2 engine that I replaced with 4.2 sump.
Would it be worth trying to fix it as it is badly

I don't see why not. Take it to an aluminium welder and get a quote. Once done you would need to crack test it for completeness. Be aware that the welding process can distort the sump.

Hi John,

Mine was worse than that and it has been repaired and is back on the car.

The good thing is that no flanges are affected, so it simply requires welding and cleaning up.

See if you can find a good aluminum welder locally and see what they think.

Hi John

In 2013, I had a similar problem to solve when my 3.8 sump cracked following the car falling off its axle stands (axle stand failure).

I took mine to a renowned motor sport company near Tamworth and they made a complete mess of it. Clearly, they didn't keep the heat in it long enough and they just produced another crack each time they welded it. They just made it worse than it was before they started.

There are a lot of aluminium welders out there that can do a good job with a TIG or a MIG welder but there are not very many that understand repairing aluminium castings.

Eventually, I found Brian at Stitchweld in Burton Upon Trent. He did an absolutely brilliant job and salvaged my sump. He also crack tested it to make sure he was happy with the job. I think it cost me around £100 to have it done.

I tried to find a replacement sump but there weren't any around at the time but I was told to expect to pay £500 if one turns up.

I personally wouldn't bother talking to anybody other than Brian at Stitchweld. I also saw him on Car SOS when they got him to repair a vintage engine block. No connection other than as a very satisfied customer.

IMO!, Instead of welding all those cracks individually, It would be far better to cut out the lower section and weld a new piece of alloy in. Less stress and chance of creating distortion and promoting further cracking.
