#1 Radio console restoration

Post by cdnp62000 » Sat Apr 29, 2017 4:17 pm

I am installing a retrosound radio to my car with new flat mount speakers. The crinkle finish paint on the console is chipped and missing in some spots. Id like to keep this looking as original as possible. Does anyone have any tips on how to paint this so it looks like the original finish?

Not used them but I'd heard that a company I think in the US, "The Roadster Factory", sells wrinkle paint specifically for dash restoration.

Thanks for the tips guys. The oven cured paint gave me an idea. I think my powder coater has a black wrinkle finish. I might try that as appears to have same look as the rattle can paint but should be more durable.

I used vht wrinkle plus. No baking required. Follow the can instructions carefully regarding heavy coats and drying intervals and you will get excellent results.

I second Tbob's experience with the VHT rattle can. Follow the instructions, I'm happy with the outcome.

That looks great Martin!
I will be looking for the VHT wrinkle plus paint then.
Thx Tbob and Martin.

There is a better alternative than the retro sound set up
I have a Caliber RC110 retro look spindle mount radio with all the modern set up built in.( AM , FM , CD player
I pod connection ) chrome finish front ( black available too )
In my opinion this is a much better and easier option and it looks and sounds the part too.
Mine cost me £ 128.00 off E Bay well worth checking out.

I wasn't aware of the Caliber but having had a quick glance I'm not sure why this would be a better or easier option than the Retrosound ?
Although It does have a CD player which some may prefer.
However Amazon feedback isn't exactly glowing.
In my experience the Retrosound is a doddle to fit & use, is a small unit giving room for speaker options plus has bluetooth and a range of fascias to suit all tastes.
