Trevor, we can all sympathise with that, and empathise with you. Others have kindly encouraged me when things just seem to be b....y awkward. You'll get there and enjoy being on the road when all this will have been forgotten.

Where are you located Trevor.....very handy if you can find someone not too far away that can help or you can help, im quite fortunate i have 2 guys with Es that are also very diy....only a few miles away......maybee we should start up some kind of find a local helper :bigrin:

Hi Trevor,

I would always replace the seal.
I would also avoid removing the down pipe unless it is your only option. You might find that you do not have enough space to remove the down pipe without further disassembly of the exhaust system.

As has been said, these seals are very soft metal and if they can't be levered off with a screwdriver, I would usually break them up using an old wood chisel. this cuts through the soft metal of the seal without damaging the rest of the down pipe.

Use it like you would on wood with the beveled edge facing downwards, so as not to cut too deeply into the metal.

How about running a small drill vertically downwards to 'split' the ring? Maybe you can then lift one of the ends up & work from there?

Good news guys, sealing rings removed from both downpipes after a 4 hour session with a dremel with cutting disk. They were well and truly welded on but we've finally got them off without damaging the exhaust and am now ready to reassemble everything. I do have the small issue of fitting the studs to the manifolds though which I am struggling with viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10750

Well nearly there. 1 manifold on and second has been test fitted. Would have been fitted fully but have a slight issue with one of the cylinder head studs not being quite long enough to fit a nut. Should be fixable and then ready for putting some heat cycles through next week. Still more work needed to get the engine bay up to scratch but the manifolds have made a big difference

Well after not being happy with the old studs I decided to replace them all. So everything had to come off the car and it's taken a while to do but finally the car is completely back together. So it's had new manifolds, studs, washers, nuts and sealing rings and I am glad I took the extra time to do the job properly.

So today was the first day running the car and I got quite a bit of burning smell and white smoke coming from between the downpipe and the manifold. I did use a healthy amount of exhaust paste so could it be this that's causing the smoke and will it pass?

I've only run the car once for 2 mins to put an initial heat cycle through the manifolds as per the instructions
