#1 Changing the MOT rules on historic vehicles.

Post by chrisfell » Tue May 23, 2017 1:18 pm

The latest idea was to introduce a rolling 40 year old exemption. Currently vehicles manufatured before 1960 are exempt.

Consultation has been halted:-

"Dear Consultee

Thank you for responding to our consultation on proposals to exempt Vehicles of Historical Interest from statutory roadworthiness testing. I am sorry that you have heard nothing from us since the consultation closed.

We had been preparing to make an announcement but this was forestalled by the calling of the General Election. We are unable to make announcements during the Election campaign and we will have to wait until a new Government has been formed.

I will contact you again when we have more concrete news."

I don't like the idea of an exemption - it singles us out as a special class, which might make it easier to pick us off. I can hear the clamour now; - "These old cars should be banned, they pay no road tax and most of them are un-roadworthy as they don't need an MoT." And that's before we even get started on pollution. Or air bags. Etc.

Yep...agree...I expressed my disapproval of the proposal. I for one will continue having my cars tested even if the legal requirement to is abolished... Guess we wait and see.
On the other side of the coin the classic car market is worth billions I believe and keeps huge numbers in employment to say nothing of the money raised for charity at car shows etc....
At present the government do not seem minded to penalise us and let's hope that remains

I also agree, setting us up as a special case makes it far easier to ban us off the road at some point, or mandate a tiny mileage allowance with the expectation that we would trailer our cars to show. I would far rather pay my way and maintain full rights for my car.
