IRS cover

Dear colleagues,
I just discovered that there is no cover above the IRS in the boot floor. :seeingstars

I think someone has cut out the floor to exchange brake pads.
I canˋt believe that.
I have just some damping material above.



This car has to be rescued. I have never seen something like this before.

Hello Sven,
I have two cars in work at the moment, an S1 and an S3 where this has been done. In the whole scheme of things its quite common. Pretty pathetic really, when its not such a difficult job to drop the the IRS.

On the S3, a cut has been made above each of the brake units, using a Cold Chisel by the look of the cut, to form flaps that have been bent upwards to expose the brakes and then bent back down again and smeared with sealant.

Those that can, do; those who can't just butcher their way through.

Thankˋs for your reply, you saved my day.
I thought that only my pre owner was such an idiot...

Next year I will start the bodywork on my S3 and hope that it can be back on the road as soon as possible.
But it is in really bad condition and I find some very interesting repairs every day.

Hard for me to understand that someone who loves his car and owns it for 36 years does such things (or lets a workshop do it)

It was a standard feature on the series 1 cars. A cutout with a cover fitted. I think it was quite common for people to replicate the cutout on later cars and fit the series 1 panel.

2+2s have a pair of panels behind the rear seat squab. Great for the pads, no good for the bleed nipple.

Dear Chris,

If that is the same square cutout as in the later long wheelbase cars, then a home made 90' 7/16" spanner will work a treat.

Is this area completely closed in an S3 body?

I saw pictures of earlier E types which show holes in this area.
