#1 Automatic to manual gearbox swap

Post by commemorative74 » Tue Feb 20, 2018 9:24 am

I have just purchased a 1966 2+2 Series One E Type which was supplied from the factory with an automatic gearbox.

I would like to convert it to a manual all synchro E Type gearbox from the same year. Whilst in principal it doesn't seem too complicated I would like to know if there are any detailed reports, posts or magazine articles with regards to this. Also a parts list or any modifications that would be required.

Thanking you in advance.

Alex

I would convert the tunnel to the correct manual format as well but this will add around £2500 to the cost with parts and labour. This significantly narrows the gearbox tunnel and ensures the correct look. Hutson do all the necessary panels. You would also need a new radio console.

I have a correct centre console (manual 2+2 1966) which I had made by monocoque engineering in Australia but then subsequently found a good second hand one from the States. This has the holes pre drilled so its just easier for me to use. let me know if you might be interested as these are very difficult to find second hand, I waited 2 years. I also had the gauntlet (ski slope around gear lever) scanned so I could print the correct 66 which has an oval hole different to early 1 and the 1.5 and series 2 and made for just 1 year. Again I found an original from the states so I was very lucky but again this took two years.

Thanks
Chris
