Looking through all my Lucas books I finally figured it out.

All E-Types with the single fan have 78378 mounted on the engine side of the radiator pulling the air through.

A second identical looking fan for Air Conditioned (AC) cars 78462. I have not found an AC book to confirm mounting and blade.

Both motors were of the 3GM style and only used on Jaguars. I think the AC motor was mounted to the front side of the condenser mounted in front of the radiator, therefore using the same blade it would rotate in the opposite direction pushing air from front to back as going with normal air flow.

So... 78378 mounted on the engine side and 78462 mounted on the bumper side of the radiator.

Don't applaud; just throw money. :welcomewave:

Almost there Geoff, but you got the motor number slightly wrong (you are missing the B/D suffix):

Some say it was a re purposed wiper motor but it does not share the same components as the DL3. So it was purpose designed and built although they do look the same. Also worth noting that Lucas did not supply the fan blade. I have no idea who did though.

Yes, David you are correct with the B/D designation as there are suffixes on the part number and it depends on where you look. Lucas catalogs list with a B/D and later with a D only. The price listing only has the number without suffixes. In Jaguar parts books the August 1961 has a B suffix only and the January 1967 has a D suffix only.

However they are all 3.GM style. Later round fan motors are 9GM 78497A.

I believe it was easier to have the motor reverse rotation rather than have two blades with opposite pitches. It may have been less expensive too.
