#1 E-Type S1 3.8 -. Correct Engine?

Post by SorenO » Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:39 am

Dear all,
I am new to this forum. I have a question, I have an E-type apparently numbers matching. However changing the oil filter insert - I discovered that there are 5 holes in the engine block, and not 4 holes as shown in the parts catalogue - 5 holes is only in the enigne block for MKII and S-Type?? CAn anyone help me to clarify this?

Kind Regards

Soren O - Denmark

Hi,
What is the engine number stamped above the filter housing. Also, there should be a casting date on the right side of the block, above and to the right of the filter housing.

Hi
thank you for the answer engine block number is stamped on the block and is corresponding.
My doubt goes towards if the block has been changed and restamped.

Hi,
You can also check the engine number on the flywheel as it should be stamped on it as well. There should be a casting date on the block. Your number suggests a late ‘62 build date so block Casting data may be around April 62.

Huh? You mean the left side of the block near the dipstick?

Yes, sorry the left side of the block as Peter noted.

It’s the ‘Jaguar’ and ‘3.8’ that’s on the right side.

Your block is fine. Two of three in the garage have the 5th hole and the third one probably has it too but I’m not taking the S3 XJ filter block off to check. Blocks were used in various models with/without subframes and various ancillaries.
