Dipstick question

Hi all , should there be a felt or some sort of seal on the dipstick , I'm just getting a bit of wetness around dipstick hole , engine is a fresh build and fine , no blow by from either breather hoses , I can even take cap off with engine running , and no puffing at all , never noticed any wetness on my other E but I probably don't drive it as hard as my white one ,
Oil consumption is good / non existent and up to full Mark, it's also the correct stick . Cheers for any ideas.

Hello Darren,

I used a felt circle that came from SNG and it did the job.

Dipsticks and oil levels and oil consumption are a surprisingly lengthy topic when it comes to E types.

On my last new engine, I got some oil around the dipstick filler tube, even with the felt disc, for the first 1,000 miles or so until the engine had bedded in.

Oil vapour blow by and catchtank levels also settled down at that point to the current negligible levels (it does blow-by and doesn't use any oil).

I was talking to a CMC technician last year. He thought oil leaks and oil consumption the XK engine could be reduced by keeping the oil level below half full on the dip stick. I have been doing this and I agree with him.

Of course I still have to be careful about keeping the dip stick completely straight. The slightest kink and is misses the oil in the sump completely, bending itself on top of the baffle plate.

That's an interesting theory - I will give the engine a good clean once the oil has leaked out :)

Yes, there should be a felt washer on the dipstick:


SNG sell this one - part no 11665 - albeit specified for the Daimler V8:


You will a) not get a true level reading and b) not have a leak proof seal without it. They only cost 60p

So an update / conclusion, one £1.98 felt ring has now cleaned my E engine up no end with no plumes of oil smoke off manifold
