Good job Joey, you will have it installed in no time at all, you look very organised.

I promise to get you an update on my power steering S1 FHC project soon. A couple of weeks and we should be on the road.

The XK with the 2.88 is rippin it up I must say.

It was a late deliver so Monday we will put the clutch assembly along with the transmission!
I’m putting the throw out bearing
Do you put the retaining clips like this or push them all the ways down?
I leave mine in the recess groove
What say you

New week!
Everything should be back by the end of this week and running in the next two!
Surprise......spoke to the man himself,Guy Broad!
Im leaving my throw out bearing clips as shown as a later series 1 4.2 has the indents to hold the clips in place.
I have a side bet, 100,000 miles in 5years.......
He says the box can do it!
Refreshing talking to like minded enthusiasts........
Okay hopefully tonite I will have the whole unit back together.
Torque flywheel bolts with dot of lock tight 67 pounds.
Notice flywheel balance with clutch, blue paint for the high point so not to turn it on installation....
Go Go go......

Just started reading your mini blog. It's bringing back memories of a lot of the same issues I had. I changed my Series 1 for a Tremec 5 speed earlier in the year and I'm doing my Series 3 auto to Tremec 5 speed in the winter months. I went for the 5th gear with 1:0.63 for the S3 for fuel savings/engine stress. I really didn't like making the cut out for the propshaft flange and I almost changed my mind and put the 4 speed back in, but that needed rebuilding and I wanted the car back on the road. Its only a small change after all!

Do you have a rough figure for how much its costing you for the conversion in parts? The Series 1 was less than $4k as it was a second hand box. The Series 3 is going to be $11k by the time I finished buying parts so I'm hoping its worth it. For sure it was on the S1.

Guy Broad quoted me circa 5K for a 5 speed conversion on my S1 FHC all inclusive and I must say it was a Stirling job.

Shovel
Nice to hear.
Couple of things for others to follow.
First did you place the retention clips in the same spot on the throw out bearing?
Broad says my picture is the way .
Second doing the swap yourself your in between 10 and 15 grand.
It’s all the small stuff
New bolts , taking apart the car and putting back together your 14 grand is right on and worth every dime.
IMHO of all the 5 speed conversions for this box.
All regret NOT cutting the cross member
Your fudging with shims and tweeting things
Just make the cut and your done!

Danny, That must have been a long time ago......the box without shipping or tax is just a bit under 7 grand.
Plus I redid the flywheel, pressure plate, cuts, drive shaft

Was back in December 2021. I ended up paying them more than that though as they also carried out a lot of other much needed mechanical work on the car.

Lets put on our glasses and double check what you posted.
You bought a new 5 speed from Guy Broad , which they installed and completed for 5,000 dollars U.S. this past December?
You had old polaroids of old the old man or something?

Okay
Follow along……slowly.
Image

Image

Image
This is the most crucial part
Screw this up and everything has to come apart again.
Lube the pilot bushing.
I personal use a touch of lube on the crank lip
Then place the flywheel over the crank while by eye
Lining up the holes
You can’t force. The flywheel over the hub!
Take both guide pins and slightly tape in guide holes
Slightly!!!
That should be enough to take 4 bolts and they should screw in by HAND .
If not your cocked
If you wacked the pins all the way it’s murder to pull back out to adjust.
So……
Slowly tap in the two pins as you tighten the 4 bolts slowly so it sucks in the flywheel even!
Once the flywheel is almost seated
Put in all the bolts and snug tighten without the locking plate
Now you tap the two guide pins till flush
Now your seated
Then back out every bolt
Lock Tite all bolts
Flush pins….
Then locking plate
Then all bolts
Torque to 67 pounds
Got it so far?
Gtjoey
Don’t forget the first 4 bolts to seat the flywheel are cross cross or opposite sides spread out

Well. Well. Well
I was not happy with the spring clips holding the throw out bearing
They seat in a center hole and a bevel behind the fork
There is only 1mm between the t/o and pressure plate so the springs are really back up support to the fork arm.
Well guess what , the repro clips are a good 3/8 th
SHORTER! Than my old ones on the pin length!
Look closely
What made me look at the old ones…..GOD only knows
So old clips went in and it’s as secure as can be
Triple check everything!!!
Note graphite black grease on the input shaft
Note left clip in picture is the good one
The straight shaft is longer
And
The indent side is SHORTER!!!!
Locks in tighter and lower and more shaft down the middle of the bearing
Make sense?

Joey,

Did you use the high strength thread locker you previously posted a picture of on the flywheel bolts? I hope not, otherwise the next person to dismantle the assembly will have a job on their hands. Medium strength is preferred in these applications.

Good progress though.

Stuart

I don’t go nuts with it
If I use red it’s two dots
If I use blue it’s a bit more
I tell you CJ used white and red!
Some guys still use the old Indian Head black .
Thanks for the tips……
When you guys wake up tomorrow
Hopefully you will see the transmission mounted to the engine

"which they installed and completed for 5,000 dollars U.S."

£5350 GBP

As I said I was quoted that on my initial enquiry, I will try and dig out the invoice and see whether I can isolate the gearbox cost and work from the rest.

That’s ok I understand
If you find the bill that’s why the water pump was 4,000 and the tire tubes were another 3 grand😀❤️
Having fun
For everyone else it’s 10 to 15 grand
Depending if you do it or not👍🏾
