#1 Fog / speed lights

Post by pafagt » Fri Aug 08, 2025 3:09 am

Hello forum.! Any experience installing a set of fog lights inside the mouth of a series 1? I just finished restoring my hood and I was wondering if it’s a good time to think about a couple of speed lights before I put it back on the car. Has anybody installed them and any advice what type and any considerations? I haven’t found many pictures of cars with them

Thanks!!

Hi Pablo

The mouth in the bonnet/hood of the series 2 and 3 E-types is bigger than that of the series 1 because Jaguar wanted to improve the cooling airflow into the radiator. Fitting any additional lighting into the mouth of a series 1 would therfore be a retrograde step particularly in countries with high ambient temeratures. Thus if you want to fit additional lights you would be well advised to mount them either side of the cooling air inlet rather than reducing it's area.

YMMV

:yeahthat:

Mounting anything in the E-Type bonnet mouth is a big no/no. Not sure why you need 'fog lights' in a classic car that will usually be driven in good weather.

It has however been done if you feel brave and want to ruin the beauty:

You could try something like this:

If you want to improve the stock lights then follow this guide:

Thanks Mike and David ! I wanted to fit something discrete inside of the mouth but I guess you are right and the reduction of flow will be detrimental…. And David convinced me with that picture of phoebe yieling “my eyes…!” Hahahahaa.. the headlights are pretty bad though. They don’t light the road very well. Thanks for the thread about improving them I will definitely go that route.

I just finished restoring the front and you are right…these hoods are a work of art we can’t ruin them.! Thanks again !
