Tolerance for rear wheel bearing..
#1 Tolerance for rear wheel bearing..
Hi guys, so doing a bit of upgrading on the e type 69ots.
Noticed a bit of play on the rear wheel at the hub area.
So holding the wheel (car in the air) at top and bottom (6 o’clock) I have 2mm of play in the wheel pulling from the top and pushing at the bottom..
My question is without stripping down and doing the end float business on the hub, would that sound like it’s within tolerance.
This car is not on splined hubs but D type alloys and studded.
I measured the 2mm by a long steel rule vertical fixed to the wheel, and using another attached to the bodywork at a right angle.

2mm is just under .080". That seems high to me. How does the other side compare?

The other side is exactly the same..only had it all rebuilt 2500k ago, by a very well known specialist in the jaguar irs field. Never checked it then, just noticed it now.

Hi Paul the correct way to measure is with a dial guage..the in/out movement......if doing it by hand then you should just be able to feel a very slight movement if it was set to service manual spec...to me 2mm sounds way too much....there is a lot of discussion re how taper bearings should be set up either with end float as per the service manual spec or with pre load....personally I set mine to 0(zero).....Steve....shouldn't be difficult to re set ..just measure correctly...undo the castle nut and swing the hub carrier off the driveshaft....refit a measured spacer to close your bearing gap....reassemble

#6 Re: Tolerance for rear wheel bearing..
Good morning boys and girls.
After 1.600 kms of fast thrashing to Biarritz and back in a Rally last week, the outward leg seemingly done on each and every Tour de France mountain pass in the Pyrenees, and with repeated max attack in a lot of hairpins, I now have about 1mm of movement, at the rim, in a rear wheel bearing.
This is detectable as quite an audible, and rather dry, click, when you grasp the wheel top and bottom.
I’ve not been in there for 10 years, and can’t remember much except that shimming them is counter-intuitive, so ……… do I fear the worst and change the bearings, or can I put it down to normal wear and do as Steve suggests, above, by swinging the hub off the shaft and trying a different spacer ?

Hi Rory.....you need to find out what's wrong.....is it the hub to hub carrier....if yes then is bearing nice and smooth....if yes then actually measure any movement....providing your splined hub isn't srized/loctited into the hub then yes undo the castle nut and pull hub/carrier forward off the shaft....measure the spacer shim.......thinner shim allowed bearing to press together more so reduce play........however you may have a UJ or driveshaft to fiff or diff o/p shaft issue....Steve

I remembered it as being counter-intuitive ?
I know I got it wrong at some point
Now I'm not so sure !
Before I get dismantling, daft question N°2 :
Does a thicker spacer in the rear hub pile indeed reduce the end-play ?
I know what the existing spacer thickness is, I wrote it down in 2022, and I seem to have noted that I need thicker to reduce the end-float.
Have an SNGB order to get in PDQ, prize for the first correct answer.
Steve ?!

Hi Rory....I explained it in my previous post.. ..a thinner shim allows the bearings to be pressed together more reducing endfloat.....or increasing preload....Steve
