#1 More angle drive woes

The OD gearbox in my car has a 1:1 speedo output ratio, our cars have a 1:1.25 ratio at the speedo, this meant I needed a hybrid angle drive. When I fitted it, my speedo was rock solid & accurate, it had just been reconditioned too. However, after a hundred miles or so it packed in, on removing the angle drive today this is what I found. Any ideas what could cause this? the speedo cable rotates freely and the speedo moves fine when I turn the cable manually. Is it possible that this wire has been wound the wrong way and has started to untwist?

This is a frequent occurrence and usually results from some excessive friction in the cable or instrument . It may have been like this since before your speedo was rebuilt. I have repaired several : I use 4mm brass rod which I file to square section which from recollection is 0.114 inches . That usually is a tightish fit in the drive gear from the gearbox , and at the output end I try and make it a tightish fit ( but often fail ) and then back this up by filling the annulus with epoxy resin based metal repair putty

I've been asked to return this angle drive to the manufacturer, they will make it good again. I'm not sure I'll be able to fit it though as, from what I can see, some strands appear to be left in the gearbox part. I will have to try and get access to a ramp and remove the gearbox mounting plate for better access.

Ian : the drive gear in the gearbox has a plastic spiral bevel gear and is ( usually ) a pull out fit, so that if you take the little cover plate off it should then be possible just to lift the drive gear out and remove any debris from it on the bench . It is not common for the drive gear itself to suffer any damage
