Hi,

I bought my 1972 Series 3 in California in Nov. I would say it is in fair condition and slowly going through the things it needed. New exhaust, petrol tank, shocks and ball joints so far.

The car just passed its MOT, but am having the engine gone through and hope to be able to catch some of the summer.

My main question is that the wire wheels were painted a similar colour to the car. I want to have them redone to original colour, but re plating seems to be more expensive than buying a new set. Any advice.

If you mean re chroming...don't think you can rechrome the spokes as the process makes them brittle
As you say might be better to get new wheels. I would speak to Motor wheel services (MWS) and see what they suggest. I know they supply new wheels and I think they re build old ones using new spokes.

Hi Neil.... welcolm to the forum.....i would and did go for a new set..... have a look at MWS good company to deal with look at all there options, painted, chrome, tubeless etc... get it on the road and join us at the forum get together day at Bicester...all the best

Neil : NW Enamelling at Buckley in N.Wales do a very good job of powder coating wire wheels at a fairly modest price. If yours are structurally OK, this may be an option to condsider . Personally, I prefer silver coated to chrome, and they are certainly easier to maintain

Christopher, have you tried Maguire's Hot Rims chrome wheel cleaner? Unless the wheels are FILTHY, you just wet the wheels, spray it on and let it set for a couple of minutes and then hose it off. If the wheels are FILTHY, then a few licks with a wire wheel brush before hosing it off leaves the wheels looking like new. I follow up with a drying with a leaf blower and I constantly get questions about how do I keep my wheels looking so good. Chrome vs. painted is, of course, a matter of personal preference.

Yes Tony, 3 cars, Simon 288gto is going down with steve in our S1 and I will be in my S3 with another friend who has a Mk2.

Thanks for the advice. I think I may look at powder coating the set I have for now, as I cant see anyone wanting a set of brown wire wheels. Ultimately a new set will be the best looking, but I have the engine to sort first. This will be done April/May so I wont be able to make the Bicester meeting.
Hopefully I will be on the road after this.
