#1 Down Memory Lane for Dealership Photos

Post by richard btype » Fri Nov 18, 2016 5:25 pm

This is a plea to anyone who might have photos of any of the Jaguar dealerships across the country from back in the day.

I recall a Henlys on the junction of the North Circular Road and Temple Fortune in North London but in spite of many searches on the internet and local newspapers cannot find a single one! Also the Henlys on the Edgeware Road possibly at Neasden.

Indeed it is!

I can only imagine that the North Circular road at this point has been widened considerable for the present road runs relatively close to a nearby brook and I recall not only the showroom but also outside parking space which used to occupy a fairly large sized piece of land - possibly not fuel sales but could be wrong!

My car also came from from Byatts (Stoke on Trent?). I remember seeing Henlys near the North Circular.

Paul - there are three of us that I know of (now!) with cars which came through Byatts - but there may, of course, be more!

Any image of F.E. Cox of Keighley in the 1960's would be wonderful for my history file :bouncyyellow:

Oh what memories! My father bought a new Jaguar every year from our home town dealer, Jaguar House on Blackpool Rd in Preston, Lancashire. Sometimes he bought a new car from Henley's in The Square, Bournemouth as a treat when we were on holiday! A new Jaguar at the end of the holiday delivered to the Carlton Hotel was always quite special. (Also where I met Colonel Ronnie Hoare of Ferrari fame, but that's another story...!) I always remember the Sales Manager who was called Ken Longmore. He did most of his business at Parkstone Golf Club, Poole. His favourite saying was, "You say snap, and We'll do the deal!". Any photos would be great to see. As it happens, my own E-type came from Parkers of Bolton. Again pics would be fantastic.

my 62 3.8 FHC was supplied by an outfit called Coombe Bridge Garage in South Wimbledon. It was a sub dealer for Henleys in London and the first owner was publisher of this

Would love to get some information on the dealership or the owner, Frank A Woods, of Pictorial Publicity of Surbiton.

Looks as though images amongst us are non existent - I tried the local rag (to Keighley) to try and find some images but no luck (but did find a couple of stories). Also tried historic archive on line for Henlys corner at Temple Fortune also nothing.

So who might have recorded garages back in the day, local councils, photographic societies, historic societies?

You could try one of Alan Chandlers books (probably 'Petroliana...On Location’). His books are fascinating and make great Christmas presents: http://www.petroliana.co.uk/Purchase3.asp

Sorry Ian, I have been away, and not able to respond to your comment about Ashton Preston Garages. That was the company name, and was part of the Loxhams Group. Well known in the Preston area. It traded as Jaguar House and was situated on Blackpool Road in Ashton, Preston. The site has been rebuilt, and the last I saw when I was up there, it was a VW dealer. The original garage long gone. I am exploring a website with old photos of Preston to find a photo. If I come up with anything, I'll let you know and send the link. Barry
